Gemma and The Kookaburra

“A story of courage, friendship, and the power of caring for one another.”

Gemma and the Kookaburra tells the heartwarming story of a young girl named Gemma who possesses a special gift—she can talk to animals. Her connection to the natural world is strong, from the tiny wrens to the wallabies, and she listens intently to the creatures around her. But when a bushfire threatens the safety of the animals in her beloved bushland, Gemma’s gift takes on a new, urgent importance.

On a hot summer day, the sky turns red, signaling the arrival of a bushfire. Gemma’s family prepares to evacuate, but Gemma is particularly concerned for her friend Larry, the young kookaburra who is missing from his nest high up in a gum tree. As the fire closes in, Gemma sets off on a mission to find Larry and bring him to safety.

In this touching tale of bravery, empathy, and teamwork, Gemma learns about the strength of the community—both human and animal—and the power of working together in the face of adversity. The book is more than just a story; it is an invitation to children to recognize the beauty of the natural world and the importance of caring for it. Gemma’s journey to save Larry also helps young readers learn the significance of emotional responsibility, empathy, and the importance of helping others in times of crisis.

In addition to the enchanting story, the book includes educational back matter for children, parents, and carers, offering insights into fire safety and how to help lost or injured native animals. Through Gemma’s eyes, readers are encouraged to take care of the land, animals, and each other, fostering a deeper sense of respect and responsibility towards nature.

Perfect for readers aged 5–9, Gemma and the Kookaburra is an engaging, beautifully illustrated story that nurtures a love for nature while teaching valuable life lessons about courage, kindness, and community.

About the Book

While the real-life Gemma doesn’t have magical powers, she shares an unbreakable bond with nature and the Australian bush. Family holidays spent in the stunning Gloucester Tops area provided the perfect backdrop for her adventures, and weekend pet-sitting for the kindergarten’s stuffed kookaburra mascot, Larry, sparked the creation of the first book in the Gemma Wild Heart series.

The series continues to grow, with several more stories currently in development:

Gemma and the Sea Turtle’s Promise- Gemma teams up with her mother and sister to rescue an injured sea turtle.

Gemma and the Whispers of the Bush – Gemma and her siblings set of to rescue and reunite a Koala and her joey separated by floodwaters

Gemma and the Little Lost Ones – Gemma and her sister help two joeys who sneak out a gap in the sanctuary fence,.

The Gemma Wild Heart series is a celebration of courage, compassion, and a deep love for the natural world.
