About the Series
The Gemma’s Wild Heart series was originally inspired by real-life experiences with the wonders of the Australian bush. The author’s nieces, especially her youngest niece Gemma, have been a continuous source of inspiration, with family holidays in the breathtaking Gloucester Tops and their home in the Hunter region providing the ideal backdrop. The series draws from true stories, like when Gemma’s mum rescued a young echidna from the road, and Gemma helped coax it out of the car when they reached the wildlife carer. Other adventures include finding an injured sea turtle on the rocks at Nelson Bay, hearing about two Tasmanian devils that escaped a Barrington sanctuary after a storm and even a weekend pet sitting for the kindy class mascot—a toy kookaburra named Larry. These real-life moments, sprinkled with a touch of magic, come together to tell the heartwarming stories of Gemma’s adventures with the animals of the Australian bush.
The author’s deep involvement in animal rescue and her work with wildlife carers during the devastating “Black Summer” bushfires of 2020, combined with her experience as a children’s entertainer and educator, ensures that the Gemma’s Wild Heart series is both captivating and informative. Each book includes carefully crafted educational back matter, designed to enhance learning and spark curiosity about the themes presented. This blend of storytelling with meaningful educational content helps foster a greater understanding and appreciation for wildlife conservation and the environment.
